Saw 3 Title Deconstruction

Relationship To Sound:

The relationship to sound in the movie Saw 3, when it comes to the title section is intended to give connotations of a movie that has many thrillers and mysterious events happening. This is due to the sound bridge of someone screaming that then goes on to fade into a windy sound effect. Having someone screaming the title sequence is foregrounding events that are to come, alongside with the windy effects reinforces the second idea of mystery.

Symbolism:

The non Diegetic sound that is used in the title sequence-a wind sound effect- could symbolise death for something that is associated with death. This is due to the cold connotations that the wind sound effect carries, which can be related to death because of the way that death is seen as being something cold, from people’s perspective.

Technical Construction:

The main text of the title sequence was most probably made by using the title option in FCP (Final Cut Pro) with a transition, along with the soundscape of screams and wind to give the perfect impression of darkness, mystery and evil.

Summary of how this appeals to the target audience: Saw 3 will appeal to a younger audience who are interested in a twisted horror storyline. This is because the production company “Twisted Pictures” is one which does a lot of special effects and is particularly good when producing horror movies. In addition, the budget that was available to them, meant that they were able to create lots of unusual scenes using, most probably CGI. However having actors that are well know like Leigh Whannell, who appears in the matrix could also make the audience want to watch it because of the quality of films that he has been in before.

How the opening sequence appeals to the target audience:

There are several ways in which the opening sequence of this movie appeals to its target audience of people who are eighteen years of age. Firstly the only light source that there is in the first scene is the torch light. This is leaves the audience with a scene mystery regarding the characters surroundings because the main light source is the torch light which highlights the protagonist but the audience does not know what is around him, conveying the idea of venerability.

In addition the tools that is used within the scene could also give connotations of a horror movie. An example of one tool that is in the scene is the saw, this is an item that could connote a horror genre because of all the things that can be done with it.
